RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct research to identify and qualify new supplier sources, aiming to enhance pricing, delivery, quality, and service for raw materials and services.
- Stay updated on relevant market trends and conditions to anticipate any changes in pricing, availability, or quality of purchased products that could impact the business.
- Procure assigned materials from qualified suppliers, ensuring favorable terms and conditions are negotiated for the company.
- Maintain records of purchase orders, quotes, and quality reports in compliance with department policies.
- Proactively gather, evaluate, and compare quotations from suppliers to ensure the best overall value for the company.
- Assess and interpret purchase requisitions, including those generated through ERP/MRP systems, to meet organizational needs.
- Address and resolve any discrepancies or issues related to issued or negotiated purchase orders.
- Organize supplier site visits and maintain transparent, positive relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of systems to track and analyze supplier performance, including delivery, pricing, and product quality metrics.
- Prepare and deliver semi-annual Supplier Performance Reports and conduct reviews to ensure supplier alignment with company standards.
- Conduct on-site supplier audits and surveys to assess compliance with ISO standards and ensure alignment with quality expectations.
- Issue Corrective Action Reports or Nonconformance Debit Memos to suppliers as needed and follow up to ensure timely resolution and compliance.
- Mentor and coach junior buyers in areas such as supplier qualification, continuous quality improvement, cost-saving initiatives, and advanced purchasing strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A background in the steel industry is essential.
- A minimum of 2 years of post-high school education in purchasing or related fields, or alternatively, 5 years of relevant work experience in purchasing.
- At least 3 years of recent purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment, which includes expertise in: Manufacturing industry purchasing processes, MRP/ERP systems, supply chain management, and contract negotiation.
- Working with steel, either in a mill, service center, or manufacturing context.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, production control, quality control, and traffic management.
- Strong understanding of product costing, financial analysis, and internal controls related to purchasing and procurement.
- Familiarity with engineering and manufacturing processes, including basic blueprint reading, as they relate to purchasing functions.
